VA will test qualified veterans and CHAMPVA participants
The VA and Tricare have instituted similar rules around who qualifies for testing:
- The patient has COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough and shortness of breath.
- The patient has traveled to one of the affected areas, like China or Italy.
- Or they have been in close contact with someone infected with COVID-19.
Tricare has yet to announce free testing and is not instituting emergency prescription refills yet, like it's done for previous emergency situations.
The VA is offering free testing to enrolled veterans, a VA spokeswoman said via email Monday. This extends to Civilian Health and Medical Program (CHAMPVA) beneficiaries.

Remedies for illnesses
It’s probably not going to be easy to find medications to keep you alive.
Simple, Natural Home RemediesProblem: Bee Sting
Solution: Baking Soda
Applying a baking soda and water paste to the site of a bee sting or other insect bites will neutralize the pain and itch. Just remove the actual stinger first, and smooth on the baking soda paste for instant relief.
Problem: Canker Sores
Solution: Honey
Researchers at a Saudi Arabian university tested three groups of people suffering from canker sores. The first group treated their sores with plain old commercial honey, the second used an oral corticosteroid cream, and the third got an over-the-counter product that forms a protective paste to cover sores while they heal. The honey users reported fewer days of pain and faster reduction in size than the other two groups due to the natural anti-inflammatory properties in honey. In fact, some honeys have strong anti-bacterial qualities, and many are shown to promote tissue growth in wound healing.
Problem: Chapped Lips
Solution: Olive Oil
It’s rich in anti-inflammatories and antioxidants. And the fat in the oil moisturizes. Rub it on like you would lip balm whenever your lips feel dry. You can even make your own lip balm by mixing olive oil and melted beeswax in a 1:1 ration, adding some essential oil if you’d like a nice scent. Or, there are many store-bought lip balms using olive oil.
Problem: Cough Due To A Cold
Solution: Dark (not milk) Chocolate
Cocoa contains a chemical called theobromine that can help the body fight off the symptoms of the common cold. A 2012 study found that the cocoa chemical blocked the action of sensory nerves in those with a cold, stopping the cough reflex. Researchers of this study found the chocolate chemical to be more effective than codeine when treating a chronic cough.
Problem: Dry Skin
Solution: Sea Salt
Sea salt makes a great exfoliator–the thicker grains do a good job of clearing away dry skin. Mix one cup of sea salt with 1/2 cup of a light massage oil and treat rough patches on the knees, elbows and heels.
Problem: Foot Odor
Solution: Vinegar
Soak your feet in a tub filled with one part apple cider vinegar and two parts warm water. It’s not sweat, but bacteria that causes foot odor, and the vinegar creates an acidic environment that kills the bacteria.
Problem: Heartburn
Solution: Apples
Apples have pectin, a soluble fiber that works very well at absorbing stomach acid. Plus, they contain two types of acid (malic and tartaric) that help to hold down acids rising from the stomach. You want sweet apples–red or golden delicious rather than tart granny smiths.
Problem: Hiccups
Solution: Two Tablespoons Sugar
Swallowing the coarse granules stimulates the vagus nerve that is triggering the spasms, calming the diaphragm.
Problem: Insomnia
Solution: Cherries (or Cherry Juice)
Cherries are one of the few natural food sources of melatonin, a hormone that affects the body’s internal clock to regulate sleep patterns, says Dr. Mark Moyad, an alternative medicine expert at the University of Michigan Medical Center and author of The Supplement Handbook. Try 1/2 cup of juice 20 minutes before bed, and make sure you’re getting 100% juice with no additives.
Problem: Minor Cuts
Solution: Turmeric
Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent and can be used as an effective disinfectant. If you have a cut or burn, you can sprinkle turmeric powder on the affected area to speed up the healing process.
Problem: Nausea
Solution: Ginger
Try raw or candied ginger, homemade ginger ale, or make ginger ice chips. Make a tea using fresh-shaved ginger. When it cools, strain the liquid into ice cube trays. Smash the frozen cubes and suck on the ginger chips to soothe an upset stomach.
Problem: Poison Ivy Rash
Solution: Brewed Tea
If you need to dry a weepy poison ivy rash, try strongly brewed tea. Simply dip a cotton ball into the tea, dab it on the affected area, and let it air-dry. Repeat as needed.
Problem: Sore Throat
Solution: Fresh Garlic Juice
Squeeze the juice from six garlic cloves into a glass of warm (not hot) water. Mix and gargle with the solution twice a day. Garlic contains allicin, which is thought to help the body to heal the infections that cause a sore throat while fighting the germs that cause the pain and the irritation.
Problem: Sunburn
Solution: Vinegar, Oatmeal or Aloe Vera
A bath with one cup of apple cider vinegar added can help balance the pH of sunburned skin, while an oatmeal bath can help with the itching. Splitting an aloe vera leaf and applying the sap can help with the burn as well as moisturize the skin.
Problem: Vomiting
Solution: Mint Leaves
Chewing a few mint leaves from your garden can remove irritation in the intestines and the esophagus, and it is also capable of destroying the germs present in the stomach which could be the reason for your vomiting.
Blood thinners:
- Natural vitamin E – 100 IUs of natural (not synthetic!) vitamin E is at least as effective as aspirin, according to some research.
- Ginkobiloba – ginko has been used for centuries to inhibit clotting and improve circulation
- Water – yes, it sounds like a cop-out but water is the best natural blood thinner there is.
- Wild Lettuce - https://www.thelostways.com/vsl/index.php?hop=otgnbh23&split=361
- Devil’s claw – this has been used as an anti-inflammatory and pain killer for successful treatment of arthritis, tendonitis and muscle pain.
- Turmeric – used for pain and inflammation.
- Ginger – pain and inflammation
- Red wine – the resveratrol and other antioxidants in red wine work well to keep cholesterol down.
- Garlic
- Olive oil (those omega-3’s again!)
- Fiber-rich foods such as oats and vegetables
- Dark chocolate
- Coconut oil and other medium-chain triglycerides instead of regular fats that can raise bad (LDL) cholesterol
However, once you develop it, it’s a life-threatening condition that requires daily treatment.
In addition to losing weight, there are some natural remedies that will work as natural blood pressure medications in a survivalist SHTF scenario.
- Increase potassium! Bananas, potatoes, tomato juice and coconut water are all high in potassium, which can help lower blood pressure.
- Coenzyme Q10 works well to lower blood pressure
- Garlic
- Hawthorn
- Foods containing magnesium and calcium
- REDUCE sodium intake. This directly affects your blood pressure!
- Almonds – they naturally reduce stomach acid. Take a handful of 15-20 and your heartburn will disappear in a half-hour or so.
- Aloe vera juice – long used to heal ulcers and soothe upset stomachs. Make sure that if you’re making your own, you follow proper procedure. Aloe is super-easy to grow.
- Apple cider vinegar – though it may sound counterproductive to throw acid on heartburn, ACV has been used forever to cure stomach ailments. Stir 2 tablespoons into a few ounces of water and drink it immediately following a meal.
- Apples – a slice of apple can reduce stomach acid and have you feeling better in 5 minutes or so.
- Baking soda – mix a teaspoon in a few ounce of water and drink. Don’t use it regularly though because it can increase sodium levels.
- Bananas
- Basil leaves – 2-3 will do the trick.
- Buttermilk
- Chamomile
- Cinnamon
- Fennel
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Grapes
- Peppermint
Type-2 Diabetes Though there is no real approved alternative treatment for type-2 diabetes, there are some interesting research studies taking place that suggest that the following may be effective in helping to control it in the future.
In a SHTF situation, an alternative treatment for diabetes may be necessary, though, so having these on hand certainly can’t hurt. Also, it should go without saying that any food that raises glucose levels should be eaten with extreme care.
- North American ginseng – may help with blood sugar control and glycosylated hemoglobin levels.
- Chromium – this essential trace mineral plays an important role in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and helps cells respond correctly to insulin.
- Magnesium – found naturally in green leafy veggies, nuts, seeds and grains. It’s an essential mineral for everything from blood sugar metabolism to sodium uptake.
- Cinnamon – studies are showing that as little as 1 gram or as much as 6 grams of cinnamon may improve blood glucose control in people with type-2 diabetes.
Oatmeal – Add oatmeal to warm bathwater to soothe and reduce itchiness, especially due to chicken pox.
Minor burns To soothe the pain of a minor burn and to promote skin healing, try these natural treatments.
Aloe Vera – Cut the leaves of an Aloe Vera plant open and gently smear the contents on the burn or sunburn.
Banana – Lay the inside of a banana peel on the burn.
Egg – A raw beaten egg can be used as part of a poultice to soothe burned skin.
Olive Oil – Gently apply a layer of olive oil to the area.
Onion – Slice an onion and gently rub the open surface on the affected skin.
Potato – Place cut potato slices on the burned area.
Insect Bites and Stings
Baking Soda & Water – Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it the bite area and allow it to dry.
Onions, Leeks, or Cabbage – Apply slices of raw onions, leeks, or cabbage directly to the bite or sting.
Parsley, Honey, and Salt – Make a poultice of parsley, honey, and salt and place it on the spot.
Tea Bags – Press a used tea bag against the bite until the itching subsides.
Cough and Sore Throat
Gargle – Make a simple but effective mouthwash of salt and warm water or freshly squeezed lemon juice and warm water. Gargle and repeat as often as needed.
Honey Tea – Mix two teaspoons of honey with warm water or with an herbal tea of your choice. Sip twice a day. (Not for children under 12 months.)
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Common symptoms of UTI include
- A burning sensation when peeing
- Frequent urination
- Cloudy or dark urine
- Urine with a strong odor
- A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Pelvic pain
Drink baking soda. Baking soda is an alkaline substance-the opposite of acidic-which means it can help neutralize or lessen the acidity of your urine. If you find yourself resisting the urge to pee because of a burning sensation, baking soda can help ease the discomfort. You will need…
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-8 ounces of fresh water
Increase vitamin C intake. Some evidence shows that increasing your intake of vitamin C could protect against urinary tract infections. Vitamin C is thought to work by increasing the acidity of the urine, thereby killing off the bacteria that cause infection.
Drink plenty of water. This is because regular urination can help flush bacteria from the urinary tract to prevent infection.
