Retirees Survivalist Info
https://www.ready.gov/
Besides the normal prepping that everyone else does here are some ideas that retirees (senior adults) should consider too:
- A plan for weaning of prescription medications and utilizing natural or over-the-counter medications as substitutes during a long-term disaster. https://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/natural-medicine/herbal-remedies/herbal-remedies.htm https://www.survivalsullivan.com/grow-shtf-pharmacy/
- Every three months you should religiously rotate your prescription meds. You should have two weeks in your 72 hour kit, 6 days in your car, and 3 days in your comprehensive medical kit
- Another good website for retiree preparedness info https://www.cdc.gov/aging/emergency/preparedness.htm
- Senior citizens who grew up hunting may no longer be able to exercise their expertise at that valuable skill at age 75. However, many senior citizens preppers should be able to keep small livestock as a source of meat and protein.
- You do not want to let any potential attackers to get close enough to you that a handgun will be necessary – but you want to own and practice with one until you are proficient anyway.
- Agree on and practice methods for contacting each other in an emergency. Do not count on the telephones working. Make a sound Emergency Communication plan for your family in case disaster strikes. Ready.gov gives some information by suggesting that you use the acronym COMMUNICATE.
- Get a plastic tote box ready for your vehicle just in case you're away from home when a disaster strikes.
- Dip cotton balls in petroleum jelly and put in a baggie or small plastic container (recycle old pill bottles) for your car tote box. These make great fire starters and they burn long and hot.
- Never be without toilet paper. Put 4 rolls in 2 gallon Ziplocs and put 1 bag in each car, one in the garage, one under each sink in the house. That way, regardless of what disaster occurs – TP will be there.
- Carry several packages of iodine pills in your tote box in the event you have to drink questionable water in your travels. Just add a bit to your canteen, shake it and let it be for a while and you are good to go.
- Make a waterproof match container out of a plastic bottle or plastic mason jar. Glue a piece of sandpaper to the lid, fill the jar with stick matches, add a candle, tighten down the ring and there you have it.
- Add a “good” manual can opener or something strong enough to cut the lid to can foods in emergency. Keep this in your tote box.
- Keep a good supply of ammunition on hand and track what you use. A little extra can also be good for barter.
- Purchase a solar battery charger and keep it in your tote box.
- Make a small fishing kit, cheap and easy. Take a small tin (preferably a round candy mint tin). Add fishing line, hooks, sinkers, small artificial bait and a couple of snubbers. (A snubber is a piece of surgical tubing with fishing line going down the center and clasps on each end to tie your fishing line to. Keep this in your tote box in your car.
- Buy a generator.
- Build a Faraday cage. A Faraday cage can be any sealed enclosure which has is an outer layer made from a conductive material and an inner layer made from a non-conductive material. A simple Faraday cage could be a filing cabinet lined with Styrofoam. The non-conductive lining prevents the charge from getting to the contents inside. The conductive outer layer absorbs incoming pulses. Wouldn’t absorbing pulses cause anything inside the Faraday cage to get fried? This isn’t the case because of something known as “field cancellation.” In layman’s terms, the pulse travels all around the conductive outer layer of the Faraday cage. It meets with other pulses and they cancel each other out. Note that batteries are generally not affected by the EMP, as long as they are not connected to a system (not in a circuit).
- Buy some inexpensive solar lights, the ones like people line their sidewalks with. Put them in the sun during daylight and bring them into your home at night. This way you will have lights inside your home at night to help you see where you are going.
